Hillsborough Temperance LOL 823
History of the lodge
The first reference to a LOL 823 in County Down appears in 1834. This was, however, a Marching Warrant issued to the Downshire Militia in 1800, and whether there is a link to the present Lodge is unknown. The Lodge currently sits at Arthur Street Orange Hall, sharing the premises with LOL 144. Early Lodge photographs show the members wearing sashes, although these were later replaced by collarettes. Hillsborough Temperance LOL 823 has a distinguished history with many of its late members having fought at the Battle of the Somme. The actions of the 36 th ( Ulster ) Division on 1 st July 1916 are depicted on LOL 823's banner.
